  Chapter 1

Keisha held back a giggle as she managed to maneuver her way around her desk, with her handbag, a cup of coffee, her cellphone and files, all in hand. There was nothing she could do about her lips that were widened and curved up at each end though, but she supposed that Jordyn would understand. It was practically impossible to not crack a smile whenever her friend went on about her adorable, six-year-old son, Justin.

The smile was gone for a moment as Keisha let out a sigh of accomplishment when she sat down on her extra comfortable chair. She had managed to drop everything she had held seconds ago, so carefully that she did not suffer any loss. How she always managed to achieve that feat would remain a mystery to her.

Maybe as her friends, family, and boss believed, that was her superpower – taking on so many things, and not being clumsy with them. Her ability to balance things so well was probably the reason why she was an excellent P.A., a great daughter, and an amazing godmother to sweet, little Justin.

“You wouldn’t have to heave that sigh if you would just take it easy on yourself and make two trips,” Jordyn’s grumbling voice sounded over the phone.

Keisha’s smile immediately came back as she looked away from the beautiful perfection that was her desk, to the phone she still had in hand. She was just in time to catch Jordyn rolling her eyes. It made her smile even harder.

“Now, what’s the fun in that? And having to make two trips? Stressful. I have a long day ahead of me as it is, already. Imagine having to drop my bag and files, and then going back to get coffee? I’d rather do it all at once, thank you.”

“The coffee room is just two doors away, Keish – literally. And wipe that smug smile off your face. One day, you’re gonna make a mess and you’ll learn your lesson.”

This time, Keisha didn’t bother to hold back the laughter that rumbled in her belly. It came out as a bark. “Haha! You’re just jealous ‘coz your ass is clumsy as fuck. Spread love and not war, sister. Stop hating. Love and light.”

Jordyn opened her mouth to reply, but before she could, a small, very familiar voice cried out from somewhere in Jordyn’s living room.

  “Maaaa!”

Jordyn heaved a deep sigh, rubbing her headache away as she did.

“That boy is going to be the death of me, I tell you.” Then, in a mocking voice, she added, “Keep it, they said. Babies are a blessing, they said. It’d get easier, they said. Oh well, where are they? Nowhere to be found, exactly.”

“Slander. I’m here. I’ve been here every step of the way, and I will be here until my last breath. Stop whining, only Justin is able to whine and look cute while doing it. You? It gives you crinkle lines. Smile, J.D. You and I know you wouldn’t trade this mom job for anything in the world.”

“Ahhh. I hate how right you always are. And yes, I know you will always be here. You always have been, and that’s why I love you.”

It was one of those moments, and Keisha let it pass quietly. She simply gave her friend a smile that said she heard more than Jordyn was trying to say.

The moment was gone in a bit and Jordyn continued, “Whatever. I need a vacation, though –”

She did not finish speaking before another cry came, cutting her off.

  “Maaaaa!!!!”

“Oops. Looks like you better get going now. I bet he probably just needs you to tie his shoelaces.”

“Or serve his toast. Spoiled brat, if I’ve ever seen one. I do all the work around here. Cook, clean, work three jobs, pay the bills, and I still get to wait on his ass. He better grow up fast so I can finally be the one to send the errands. Damn!”

Keisha felt her friend’s grievance. She did, surely. She knew Jordyn fifteen years ago when they had only been twelve-year-olds in seventh grade. She knew Jordyn when she had her first crush, first love, first kiss, first fight, and first heartbreak. She was also there when her friend took that pregnancy test that came out positive despite all hope. She was there when Justin’s father disappeared, forgetting a thousand promises, right after he heard he was gonna be a father. She was there when her friend made the decision to face life squarely in the face and raise her son on her own. She was there when that son was brought into this world and will be here until her last breath.

She had seen it all. Every struggle, every joy, and yes, she knew how exhausting motherhood could be. She knew how much strength Jordyn had, and she also knew, without the slightest doubt, that Jordyn wouldn’t choose any other way if given the chance all over again. And this was why Keisha always found it totally adorable whenever her friend called her to table her numerous complaints.

“You better get to his majesty before he cries again. As for me –” Keisha’s eyes darted to the clock on the wall, adjacent to her desk. It said that it was about ten minutes to eight, which meant the boss would be arriving at any moment. “I gotta go. We’ve both got work to do.”

“I see a long day ahead,” Jordyn said as she checked her earrings, and smoothened her hair.

“Me too. And you’re already late for Justin’s school. Blow kisses to the handsome little angel for me.”

“You mean crazy little devil,” Jordyn contradicted in a tone tha
t said “matter-of-fact.” Of course, it made Keisha laugh. Jordyn was moody, all day, every day.

“I shall accept no slander against my godson.”

“Oh shut up. You spoil him too much. You and Ma. Anyway, best say goodbye now. I’ll talk to you later. Say 'hi' to Mr. Wells for me now, won’t you? Tell him I’m still waiting for him to look my way. You know, since you don’t wanna shoot your shot?’

Slightly mortified, Keisha covered her face and dragged in a ragged breath. In times like this, she was glad that the boss’s office was secluded, which made hers, too. Imagine someone walking past and hearing that she had a crush on the boss, like most of the female employees in the company. She would will the ground to open up and swallow her.

“You are on speaker, J.D! Gosh! Shout it out for the whole world to hear. Get out of here!”

This time, it was Jordyn’s turn to giggle. “No one is gonna blame you, though. I mean, seriously, your boss is one hot, totally edible, and eligible billionaire bachelor. One of the few remaining in Colorado. Every one of them seems to be getting hitched lately.”

Keisha was still struggling to form words when the third cry came, louder and fiercer this time.

  “Maaaaaaaa!!! I need you here!”

Nothing more was said between the two friends. Jordyn gave an exaggerated eye roll as she grabbed her handbag and Keisha waved at her friend, just before ending the video call.

She had just finished going over the conversation in her mind and was still shaking her head, with the smile still in place, when the doors opened, revealing ‘the boss’.

She immediately got to her feet, her lips going farther apart as they often did on their own whenever this man was within a mile radius. She was sure that her eyes had lit up, but thank God for nerd glasses, that would be near impossible for him to detect.

At least, she didn’t blush like a silly school girl, anymore. Not that she could blame herself. Kane Wells was every woman’s dream man. No, she wasn’t putting extra icing on the cake. He was IT!

Tall and hot, with body that made everything he wore look good. Facially, he probably wouldn’t make Forbes’ top ten most handsome men, but when the height, the swag, the chiseled jaw, and electric green eyes came together, no one could describe him as anything other than good looking.

“Mr. Wells! Good morning. I will have that,” she chimed as she reached for his briefcase but he stopped her, with a charming smile on top of that.

“C’mon, Keisha. We are way past that. Three years working with me and not once have I ever allowed it.”

“Not once has it stopped me from asking still, you know.”

“Ah yes. Your determination is one of the things I love about you, but sometimes, it can be so bothersome. I brought it all the way up here, I can surely manage the few remaining steps to my office.”

“And I should just go brew your coffee because you would be needing it to start a day.”

He came to a stop then, right in front of her, and flashed her that billion-dollar grin. Her heart didn’t topple like it used to do in the beginning, but it did tilt.

“Exactly, Ms. Young. Now, if you would just step away, I shall make it to my office and be happy to wait for your special coffee. You still haven’t gotten around to teaching me how you make it.”

Keisha stepped aside then, even though she was not in his way – not really. He had come to stand in front of her, and he could very easily, sidestep. But this was sort of a ritual. It was their thing – they had this conversation, exactly this way, every blessed morning that was a good morning indeed.

It had started three months ago and she had quickly found herself looking forward to it, long ago.

“But I have, Mr. Wells. And you make good coffee too. Taste just the same as mine.”

He raised the hand that was free and waved a finger. “Not true. I have never been able to get the taste. I still maintain that you are holding back the secret ingredient and that’s not fair.”

Keisha giggled. How could she not? This man had made her feel comfortable within the first few weeks of working for him and as the years went by, although she had managed to get rid of her feelings – most of it – they had found a good place between professional and friendly relationship. A place where none of them had dared to leave. Suffice to say, they were both happy and comfortable with how things were.

“If I was, you would have figured it out a long time ago on one of your many spy missions,” she countered. She knew he used to sneak up on her to watch her prepare the coffee, sometimes. He had truly believed she had a secret ingredient.

Kane didn’t miss a beat. “Oh, I have.”

Truly surprised by this, her eyes widened questioningly. “Oh, really?”

“Yes. The secret ingredient is you, Ms. Young,” he said so simply. “It tastes different because you make it. Good morning once again, we shall continue this discussion in my office when you bring my coffee.”

He walked away then, leaving a crush-struck Keisha to take in the implication of his words. Her heart was beating faster than normal and her stomach felt skittish.

It tastes different because you make it… That wasn’t a part of the script. And he had said it so genuinely, as though he truly meant it. But she knew he could only be joking, right? It was not unusual for Kane to tease her. Not unusual at all, and she would best keep that in mind.

It wasn’t until his back disappeared behind his office walls, that her legs began to move.

It really sucked when this happened. When he broke all her resolve and years of hard work, with just a single, simple comment. Now, she would have to spend the rest of the week reminding herself that this was her boss and nothing could ever happen.

Why? Oh well, there were a number of reasons.

One, Wells Holdings, which Kane Wells happened to be the CEO of, had a strict rule against office relationships. Keisha Young could not afford to lose her job over a silly crush.

Two, Kane Wells was anything but interested in her, romantically. The media knew him, they knew his type was the tall, long-legged, hot blonde – Bimbos, basically. And after working so closely with him for the past thirty-six months, she had helped her boss send roses and handwritten letters to about five different women whom he had considered himself “casually dating.”

He wasn’t the commitment type, obviously – Keisha was. She wanted something like what her parents had. Stable, peaceful, full of love, long-lasting. Kane Wells didn’t seem interested in or even capable of giving any woman that.

Three, as a professional in the unrequited love studies, she had suffered enough heartbreaks to know that it never ended well and there was no use hoping. Keisha had been in only a handful of relationships and she was twenty-seven. Alright… make that two relationships, both of which she never wished to talk about. Lessons learned, hurt forgotten? Maybe not.

Despite how distracted she was, she finished making Kane’s coffee without a hitch and after filling his lucky mug, began to walk towards his office. He liked his coffee with a little cream and just a sprinkle of sugar. An unexpected preference for a man of his caliber.

Black coffee was more suited to the “power man”, stereotype, but it wasn’t for Kane Wells. He enjoyed creamy things.

Keisha shook her head as she realized how suggestive that thought was… creamy things.

  Gosh, Keisha, stop it!

Imagining Kane and creamy things would not exactly help her right now. Thankfully, by the time she got to his office, she had successfully rid herself of the scandalous thoughts.

Kane was staring pensively at his mac’s screen when she entered. He had left the door open for her, so she simply walked straight to his desk and deposited the coffee. Not wanting to disturb his thoughts, she turned around and started to leave.

She had not even taken a step when he stopped her.

“No, Keisha, don’t go. You need to see this. I have just received a status report from the team in Miami and things aren’t quite add
ing up. With this representation, it would mean that the company there is running at a thirty-million-dollar loss. How is that even possible? The audit two months ago showed that everything was fine.”

Loss? That got Keisha’s attention immediately so she was by his side in seconds. She arched over and inched closer to the screen. Still, she had to squint her eyes to take a good look at the chart.

As she studied it, her agitation began to grow. Kane was right. The chart showed that the company in Miami was recording loss. Their stock was dropping massively, and so were sales.

“I don’t get it,” she muttered and went ahead to study it again, silently hoping that they had both missed something, that they were seeing wrongly.

By the time she finished taking the fifth look, she knew that it was what it was. She rose then, every thought of crushes and love suddenly forgotten. This was business and like anyone in business, she hated losses, especially this much.

“How is this even possible? How could we have incurred so much loss in so little time?”

Kane let out a deep sigh, then dropped his head in his hand to rub his forehead.

“I’ll be damned if I know. I hear it’s dropping by the minute. Let me log on to the company’s stock exchange site.”

Keisha held her peace as Kane’s hands began to type away on his keyboard. As the search results loaded, she took the cue to connect the system to the big screen at one end of the office. As soon as the results came, they got busy with studying it.

Her heart dropped just as she saw what they were looking for. It was at the same time that Kane spoke.

“We are down by thirty-two million now.”

“Something’s wrong. This has never happened before.”

“That’s right. Call a board meeting, NOW! Have everyone who is available meet us in the boardroom in ten minutes, tops.”

Kane was already on his feet, but not before downing his coffee.

“Is there anything else you would like me to do, sir?”

“Bring all the audit files we have for the branch there. I want to go through everything. Also, demand an account statement for up until last Friday. That should be available because they had the weekend to work on it. Have Blackwell fax it over.”
